Random Number Generators and Dice

These random number generators and dice cover every shape a number takes: a single number, a roll of up to 20 dice, a coin, a card, a lottery line, a date. Each outcome in a range has exactly the same chance.

Most random decisions come down to a number. Who goes first is a number from 1 to 4, a raffle is a set of numbers without repeats, and a dice roll is a number from 1 to 6. A coin is a number from 1 to 2 with nicer names, and a card is one of 52.

Which random number tool to use

Bar chart of the chance of one particular result on the random number tools: coin flip: heads 1 in 2, 1 to 3: a 2 1 in 3, die: a six 1 in 6, 1 to 10: a 7 1 in 10, card: ace of spades 1 in 52, 1 to 100: a 42 1 in 100, powerball jackpot 1 in 292,201,338.
Every tool here gives each outcome the same chance; what changes is how many outcomes there are.

How every number tool draws

Whichever tool you use, the draw is made the same way: an unbiased whole number from the browser's cryptographic generator, with nothing stored or sent. Every outcome in the range gets the same chance, which statisticians call a discrete uniform distribution.

What changes between tools is only how many outcomes there are. The chart shows the odds of one particular result on each, from a coin to a Powerball jackpot.

Random Number Generators and Dice: FAQ

Are these numbers truly random?

They are cryptographically secure pseudo-random numbers from your browser, not measurements of a physical process. For games, draws and classroom use the difference has no practical effect: the numbers cannot be predicted and every outcome has the same chance. How our randomness works explains what that means.

Do lottery number generators improve my chances?

No. Every combination has the same chance of being drawn, however it was chosen. A generator saves you from choosing and avoids popular patterns such as birthdays, which matters only for how many people you might share a prize with.

Why did I get the same number twice in a row?

Because each draw is independent. A die has no memory, and neither does the generator. If you need every result to be different, switch on No repeats in the number generator.
