Odds for a random number from 1 to 10
“Pick a number between 1 and 10” is the classic way to settle something small: who goes first, who gets the last slice, which question to answer. Letting the page draw the number means nobody has to guess what someone else is thinking, and nobody can change their mind afterwards.
Each draw has ten possible results with the same chance, a discrete uniform distribution. The table gives the odds for some common calls.
| Result | Chance in one draw |
|---|---|
| One particular number, such as 7 | 10% |
| An even number | 50% |
| 5 or lower | 50% |
| 8 or higher | 30% |
| A prime number (2, 3, 5 or 7) | 40% |
| 1 or 10 | 20% |
It takes 29.3 draws on average before all ten numbers have come up at least once. This is the coupon collector's problem: the last missing numbers take the longest to turn up.
Each draw comes from your browser's cryptographic random generator, with no lean toward any number. The method is described in how our randomness works.
Example: a closest-guess game from 1 to 10
Four children each call a number: 2, 5, 7 and 9. The draw gives 6. The guesses 5 and 7 are equally close, so those two play again while the others are out.
A second draw gives 3, and the child who kept 5 wins. To avoid ties altogether, give each child a different number as their own and draw until one of them comes up.
With only two players, a coin flip is quicker. With a list of names, the picker wheel draws a name directly, with no numbering needed.
Random Number Generator 1 to 10: FAQ
Is 10 included?
Yes. Both ends are included, so the result can be 1, 10 or any whole number between.
Do people and computers pick differently?
A person asked to “pick a number from 1 to 10” is making a choice, and choices have habits. This generator has none: each number has the same 10% chance on every draw, whatever came before.
How do I get the numbers 1 to 10 in a random order?
Set How many numbers to 10 and tick No repeats. Every number appears exactly once. To shuffle names or other items instead of numbers, use the random order generator.
Two of us drew the same number. How likely is that?
For two draws, 10%. With more draws a match becomes likely quickly: 28% for three draws, 49.6% for four and 69.8% for five. This is the birthday problem with 10 numbers in place of 365 days.
