Spin the Wheel

Enter your list, press Spin, and the wheel picks one entry at random. Every entry has the same chance unless you give it extra shares.

How the wheel picks a winner

    1. Your list becomes slices. Each line is one entry. An entry with one share gets one slice of equal width; Ada *3 gets a slice three times as wide.
    2. The winner is drawn first. When you press Spin, the page asks the browser's cryptographic generator for a random whole number between 0 and the total number of shares minus one. That number falls inside exactly one entry's shares, and that entry is the winner.
    3. A resting point is drawn. A second random value decides where inside the winning slice the pointer stops, so it does not always land dead centre.
    4. The wheel turns to it. The wheel makes five to seven full turns and slows down until the pointer rests on that point. The animation follows the draw; it never changes it.

Because the draw happens before the animation, the result is the same whether you watch on a fast laptop, a slow phone or with animations switched off in your system settings. In that last case the wheel jumps straight to the result.

Example: a weighted wheel with four names

Take four entries: Ali, Beatriz and Chen with one share each, and Dara written as Dara *3. That makes six shares in total.

    EntrySharesNumbers that winChanceSlice
    Ali101 in 6 (16.7%)60°
    Beatriz111 in 6 (16.7%)60°
    Chen121 in 6 (16.7%)60°
    Dara33, 4, 53 in 6 (50%)180°

The page draws one number from 0 to 5. If it is 4, Dara wins, and the wheel turns until the pointer sits somewhere inside Dara's half of the wheel.

Bar chart of 60,000 spins of a weighted wheel: Dara with three shares won 30,041 times against 30,000 expected, while Ali, Beatriz and Chen with one share each won 9,990, 9,967, 10,002 times against 10,000 expected.
Three shares means three times the chance: Dara wins about half of all spins. Expected counts in brackets.

Chance per entry on an unweighted wheel

With equal shares every entry has a chance of 1 divided by the number of entries. Where a name sits on the list makes no difference, as the run of 80,000 spins below shows.

Bar chart of 80,000 spins of the picker wheel with eight names: every name won between 9,911 and 10,153 times, against 10,000 expected for each.
The same draw the wheel makes before it turns, repeated 80,000 times. No position on the list gets an advantage.

Using the wheel in a classroom

    • Paste the class list once and save it under the class name. It is there the next time you open the page on the same computer.
    • Press Present to fill the screen with the wheel and the winner, which is easier to read from the back of the room. Press Esc to leave.
    • Tick Remove winner after each spin when every student should get exactly one turn.
    • To split the class instead of picking one person, use the random team generator. To set a speaking order for everyone, use the random order generator.

Using the wheel for a giveaway or on a stream

    • Paste the entrants, one per line. If someone earned extra entries, write them once with a weight (name *2) instead of pasting the name twice.
    • Switch the sound on or off with the sound button. The setting is remembered.
    • For a stream overlay, open the wheel with ?transparent=1 at the end of the address. Only the wheel and the winner are shown and the page background is transparent.
    • The last 10 winners stay listed under the wheel until you clear them, so you can read them back after the draw.
    • For a draw without the animation, paste the same list into the random winner generator. To give every entrant a ticket number instead, use the number generator with names.

    Spin the Wheel: FAQ

    Is the wheel fair?

Yes. The winner is one draw from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, made before the wheel starts to turn. With equal shares each of n entries wins with a chance of exactly 1 in n.

The spin you watch is an animation that turns the wheel to the entry that was drawn; its speed and length have no effect on who wins. See how our randomness works.

How do I make sure nobody is picked twice?

Tick Remove winner after each spin. The winner is taken off the list about a second after the wheel stops, so the next spin chooses among the entries that are left. If you would rather decide each time, leave the box unticked and press Remove winner under the result.

Can one entry have a better chance than the others?

Yes. Write a star and a number after it: Ada *3 gives Ada three shares, so her slice is three times as wide and she is three times as likely to win as an entry with one share. Weights go from 1 to 100.

Can I spin the wheel for yes or no?

Yes. Replace the list with two entries, Yes and No, and each gets half the wheel and a chance of 1 in 2. Add a third line such as Maybe and each answer has a chance of 1 in 3. For a plain answer without the wheel, the random yes or no generator gives one in a single click.

Can the wheel pick a random number?

Yes. Type the numbers as entries, one per line, for example 1 to 12 for a number wheel. Each number then has the same chance, 1 in 12 on that wheel.

For a wide range or several numbers at once, the random number generator is quicker, because you set only the lowest and highest number.

How do I use the wheel on a stream in OBS?

Add a Browser source and point it at https://randomval.net/wheel/?transparent=1. That address shows only the wheel and the winner on a transparent background.

To load your own list, make a share link first and add ?transparent=1 before the #. Use the Interact window in OBS and click the wheel, or press the space bar, to spin.

    Where is my list stored?

In your browser's local storage, on this device only. It is not uploaded.

A share link is different: it carries the list in the link itself, in the part after the #, and anyone who gets the link can read the list. Do not put names in a share link that you would not send to the same people in a message.

How many entries can the wheel hold?

Up to 2,000. Labels are drawn while a slice is wide enough to read; with several hundred entries the slices become thin lines, but the draw works the same way and the winner is always shown in full under the wheel.
