Name Generator

The name generator makes random full names, first names or last names from ten origins, up to 50 at a time. Pick a type, an origin and a quantity and press Generate.

Names

  1. Press Generate

A name generator is a shortcut past the blank page. Writers use one to name a minor character without stopping the scene, and game masters need a believable innkeeper in the next ten seconds. Teachers want example names for a worksheet, and developers need a few rows of people for a test database.

How the name generator builds a name

The generator above covers the common case: a first name, a last name or both, from one of ten origins. When you choose “Any origin”, the origin is drawn first and both parts of the name then come from that origin's lists, so you do not get accidental mixes.

The lists are short selections of well-known names, 20 to 25 per list. They say nothing about how common a name is; for that, real records such as the Census Bureau's surname counts are the place to look.

Six full names from the name generator, one per origin: Amanda Johnson (American), Olivia Wilson (British), Josefa López (Spanish), Shota Ito (Japanese), Anand Kumar (Indian), Marina Sokolov (Russian).
The ten origins together allow 8,450 first and last name combinations.

More specific name generators

The tools below go further in one direction each. The first name generator filters by origin and style, the last name generator has fifteen origin lists, and the middle name generator suggests names by style. Themed generators for British, royal and boat names build a name from parts rather than picking it whole.

If you need names as part of test data, with an email address and phone number that cannot reach a real person, use the test data generator instead.

Name Generator: FAQ

Where do the names come from?

From lists written into the site: for each of ten origins, 20 to 25 female first names, the same number of male first names, and 20 to 25 last names. The lists are short selections of well-known names. They are not a census, and a name appearing here says nothing about how common it is.

Can a generated name belong to a real person?

Yes. The names are ordinary ones, so most combinations will match somebody somewhere. That is fine for a story or a test account, but do not attach generated names to real contact details or use them to pass as someone else.

How is a name picked?

First and last name are each drawn independently from their list, with every entry equally likely. The draw uses your browser's cryptographic random generator; see how our randomness works.

Can I pick a random name from my own list?

Yes, with a different tool. Paste the list into the name picker wheel and spin, or use the random winner generator for a draw without the animation. Every name on your list has the same chance.

Can it make fantasy names for a game or an RPG?

Not this generator: it gives real first and last names from ten origins. For a fantasy campaign, the royal name generator makes names for fictional kings, queens and nobles, and the place name generator has a fantasy flavor for towns, rivers and mountains.
