How the random boy name generator picks a name
The page holds 114 boy names in eight lists: English (20), Irish (15), Spanish (15), Hebrew (15), Italian (13), French (12), German (12) and Greek (12). Choose a list, or all origins to pool them, and one name is drawn. The result shows the name and the list it came from.
On “All origins” every entry has the same chance, so an English name comes up about 18% of the time and a Greek one about 11%. Each pick is an unbiased draw from the browser's cryptographic random generator, as described in how our randomness works.
The origin labels are broad. Many names are used in several languages and appear under one of them only, and three appear under two.
Example: a shortlist for a baby boy
Two parents want an Irish name. Set the origin to Irish and take turns pressing the button, writing down any name you both like. The list has only 15 names, so repeats start after a few presses; switch to Hebrew or another list for comparison.
With a shortlist of three, the picker wheel can make the final draw, or simply break a tie. The middle name generator suggests five middle names at a time, and the first name generator adds style filters such as classic or modern.
Popularity and meanings
The page gives no meanings or popularity figures. An earlier version did, without a source, and they were removed.
For how common a name is today, use the official baby-name statistics for your country. In England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics found that Muhammad, Noah and Oliver were the top three boys' names in 2023. For full names with a surname, see the name generator.
Questions about the random boy name generator
How many boy names are on the list?
114 entries in eight lists. Alexander and Christopher are on both the English and Greek lists, and Antonio on both the Spanish and Italian ones, so there are 111 different names. On “All origins” those three come up 1 time in 57, every other name 1 time in 114.
Are these the most popular boy names?
No. The lists are a selection of well-known names, not a ranking. In England and Wales the top three boys' names in 2023 were Muhammad, Noah and Oliver: Noah is on the Hebrew list, but Muhammad and Oliver are not on any list here.
Is there a girl name generator?
Use the first name generator with gender set to Female. It has 76 girls' names from seven origins and can also filter by style.
