How the middle name generator picks five names

The page holds 300 names in 30 small lists: six origins (English, Spanish, French, Italian, Irish, German) times five styles (classic, modern, nature-inspired, virtue names, short). Each list has 8 to 14 names. Your two choices select the lists to draw from, and “all” pools them.

Duplicates are removed first, so with both menus on “all” the draw is from 259 different names. The matching names are shuffled and the first five are shown. The shuffle uses the browser's cryptographic random generator, as described in how our randomness works.

The style labels are the page's own grouping, not an official classification, and a name can sit in more than one list. The Irish and German virtue lists hold traditional names such as Gráinne and Hedwig, not words like Grace or Hope.

Bar chart of the middle name generator's lists by origin: English 56, Spanish 52, French 48, Italian 48, Irish 48, German 48 names, each split into 5 styles.
One origin and one style together hold 8 to 14 names, and the generator shows five of them at a time.

How to try out a middle name

In Western naming order a middle name sits between the first name and the surname, and it is often where a family name or a name from another language finds its place. Treat the suggestions as a starting list.

  1. Say the full name aloud, first, middle and last, and listen to how the three run together.
  2. Write out the initials and check they do not spell a word you would rather avoid.
  3. Keep two or three favorites and try each one with the first name a few times over a day or two.
  4. If you still cannot choose, put the finalists on the picker wheel and let it decide.

Example: a short middle name for Clara

Parents who have chosen Clara want a short middle name. Leave the origin on all and set the style to Short & Simple: that pools 55 different short names, such as Mae, Jane, Eva and Leo. Five come up per click.

Say Clara Mae, Clara Jane and the others aloud with the surname before deciding. If the first name is still open, the first name generator filters by origin and style, and the random boy name generator has 114 boy names. The name generator gives full names from ten origins.

Questions about the middle name generator

How many middle names are on the list?

300 entries in 30 lists of 8 to 14 names. Some names sit on several lists, Emma and Rosa on four each, so there are 259 different names. Duplicates are removed before each draw.

Can a set of five contain the same name twice?

No. The matching names are shuffled once and the first five are shown, so each name appears at most once per set. Press the button again for a new set; names from the last set can come back.

Can I get a whole name with a middle name in it?

The British name generator has an “Include middle name” box that adds one of 20 middle names between first name and surname.
