How the random yes or no generator decides

Each press draws one random whole number, 0 or 1, from the browser's cryptographic generator. A 1 shows Yes and a 0 shows No, so the odds are the same as in a fair coin toss.

The answer does not depend on your question or on earlier answers. After five No answers in a row, Yes is still 1 in 2; expecting otherwise is the gambler's fallacy. The method is described in how our randomness works.

How often the same answer comes up in a row

Streaks are normal. The chance that a run of answers is all Yes halves with every extra answer, and the chance of all No is the same.

Even split in the long run, streaks in the short run. A run of seven or more identical answers turns up in most sets of 1,000.

When a random yes or no answer helps

Use it for small choices where either outcome is fine: dessert or no dessert, this film or the next one, who starts. It can also show you what you wanted all along. If the answer disappoints you, you have learned your preference, and you are free to follow it.

Do not use it for decisions about health, money, safety or other people. For a choice between more than two options, use the random choice generator or spin the wheel; for heads or tails, there is a coin flip. To settle where to eat, the random restaurant generator picks from your own list of places.

Questions about the random yes or no generator

Is it really 50/50?

Yes. The page draws a 0 or a 1 from the browser's cryptographic random generator, and each has exactly the same chance. Over many answers the split comes close to half and half, with streaks along the way.

Can it answer maybe?

No, only Yes or No. For three answers, such as yes, no and maybe, write them on three lines in the random choice generator.
