How the random country generator picks a country
The page holds a list of 195 countries, each tagged with one continent: 54 in Africa, 47 in Asia, 45 in Europe, 23 in North America, 14 in Oceania and 12 in South America. Leave the filter on all continents and every country has the same chance, 1 in 195, whatever its size.
Choose a continent and the draw is limited to the countries tagged with it. On Europe each country then has a 1 in 45 chance, on South America 1 in 12.
The menu offers six of the seven continents in the seven-continent model. Antarctica has no countries, so it is left out. For a draw among all seven, use the random continent generator.
Which continent a country is listed under
Countries that span two continents are listed under one of them only: Russia under Europe, Turkey under Asia and Egypt under Africa. Wikipedia's list of transcontinental countries shows where each one is divided.
The 195 are the 193 member states of the United Nations and its two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Territories whose status is disputed are left out by that rule. Capitals were shown in an earlier version and have been removed until they can be checked against an official source.

How many countries are on the list?
195: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus its two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Africa has the most with 54, then Asia with 47, Europe with 45, North America with 23, Oceania with 14 and South America with 12.
Does a big country have a better chance?
No. With no filter, Russia and Vatican City each have the same 1 in 195 chance. For a random point on the map, where large countries are hit more often, use the random location generator.
Can the same country come up twice in a row?
Yes. Each press is a new draw from the whole list, so on all continents the last country comes up again one time in 195. To go through countries without repeats, type the ones you want into the picker wheel and tick Remove winner after each spin.
