How the random continent generator picks a continent
The page holds a list of seven names: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America and South America. Each press of the button picks one of them, with a chance of one in seven (14.3%) each.
A continent can come up twice in a row, because each pick is independent. Over many presses the counts even out: the chart shows one run of 70,000 picks. Each pick is an unbiased draw from the browser's cryptographic random generator, as described in how our randomness works.
Seven continents or six: which model the list uses
The list follows the seven-continent model, which most English-speaking countries teach. Other conventions exist: much of Latin America counts the Americas as one continent, and Russia and parts of Eastern Europe often count Europe and Asia as one, Eurasia. Wikipedia's article on the continent sets the models side by side.
The tool does not offer those other models. Australia/Oceania is one entry, the same grouping the country generator uses when it files Fiji and Samoa under Oceania.
Ways to use a random continent
- Pick a continent, then have students name as many of its countries as they can in one minute. The random country generator can pick a country from the same continent afterwards.
- Let chance decide which part of the world a project, a recipe night or a reading list starts with.
- Use it as the first step of a guessing game: continent first, then country, then city. The random city generator filters its 73 cities by continent for the last step.
- For an exact spot rather than a whole continent, the random location generator draws a latitude and longitude.
Questions about the random continent generator
Why is Antarctica on the list?
Because the seven-continent model counts it. Antarctica has no countries, so the random country generator leaves it out, but here it has the same 1 in 7 chance as the other six.
Is Oceania a continent?
In the seven-continent model the continent is Australia, and Oceania is the wider region that adds the Pacific islands. The list joins them as Australia/Oceania so that New Zealand and the islands are not left out.
How often does the same continent come up twice in a row?
One press in seven, on average. Each pick ignores the one before. To go through all seven without repeats, type them into the picker wheel and tick Remove winner after each spin.
