How the random place generator picks a place
The page holds a list of 30 famous places, each tagged with one kind: 8 natural wonders, 6 landmarks, 6 historical sites, 6 cities and 4 beaches or islands. Leave the filter on all destinations and each place has a 1 in 30 chance.
Choose a kind and one place is drawn from that group only, so each natural wonder then has a 1 in 8 chance and each beach or island 1 in 4.
Each pick is an unbiased draw from the browser's cryptographic random generator, as described in how our randomness works.
What the list of famous places includes
The tool shows the name of the place and its kind. Short descriptions in an earlier version were removed because their figures had no source.
The list is a small selection of well-known sights, chosen when the page was written; it is not a ranking and not travel advice. Several of them, such as Machu Picchu, Petra and Ha Long Bay, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
For a point anywhere on the map, use the random location generator. For a city from a longer list, the random city generator has 73. For a made-up place, use the place name generator.
Questions about the random place generator
How many places are on the list?
30: 8 natural wonders, 6 famous landmarks, 6 historical sites, 6 cities and 4 beaches and islands.
Why does a natural wonder come up so often?
Because the list has more of them. 8 of the 30 places are natural wonders, so with no filter one comes up about 27% of the time. Choose a kind from the menu to give the beaches and islands a turn.
Can I pick from my own list of places?
Not on this page. Type your shortlist into the random choice generator, one place per line, or onto the picker wheel if you want to watch it spin.
