How the dad joke generator avoids repeats
The page holds a fixed list of 50 jokes, written into the page itself; there is no joke database or outside service. Each press picks at random from the jokes you have not seen yet in this visit, so the first press has 50 to choose from, the second 49, and the last joke of the round is certain.
Once all 50 have appeared, the round starts over. The counter under the joke (“Joke #12 of 50”) shows how far through the round you are. Each pick is an unbiased draw from the browser's cryptographic random generator, as described in how our randomness works.
Why the no-repeat rule matters: 50 presses instead of about 225
Without the rule, every press would be a fresh pick from all 50 jokes. Seeing every joke at least once would then take, on average, 50 × (1 + 1/2 + … + 1/50), or about 225 presses. This is the coupon collector's problem: the last few unseen jokes take the longest to turn up.
With the rule it takes exactly 50 presses. For the same no-repeat draw from your own list, use the picker wheel and tick Remove winner after each spin.
What a dad joke is, with examples from the list
A dad joke is a short joke, usually built on a pun and often told as a one-liner or a question and answer. The groan is part of the point.
Two from the list: “Why don't scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything.” And: “I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down!” No joke on the list runs longer than two sentences.
Copying a dad joke
The Copy Joke button copies the text on screen to your clipboard, using the browser's Clipboard API with a fallback for older browsers. Press it after a joke is showing.
What the dad joke generator does not do
There is no favorites list, no search, no rating and no way to submit a joke. For jokes sorted into dad jokes, science jokes and puns, use the random joke generator; for a famous line with its source, the random quote generator.
Ways to use a dad joke
- Breaking up a long work session with a one-liner.
- A quick icebreaker for a presentation or a classroom.
Questions about the dad joke generator
What happens after all 50 jokes?
The list starts over and the counter goes back to 1. The first joke of the new round is drawn from all 50, so the joke you saw last can, one time in 50, come up again straight away.
Does it remember which jokes I have seen?
Only while the page is open. Refreshing or coming back later starts a new round of 50.
Are these the same jokes as on the random joke generator?
Some are. The random joke generator has 30 jokes in three categories, and several of its dad jokes and puns are also on this list. It has no no-repeat rule, so repeats come sooner there.
