How the street name generator builds a name
A street name has two parts: a name from a list of 106 (trees, colors, landscape words, compass points and the like) and a street type from a list of 27. Choose a type or leave it on random, and 5 to 20 names are drawn, all different within one set.
With the type on random there are 2,862 possible combinations (106 × 27). With one type chosen there are 106, so a set of 20 Courts uses almost a fifth of them.
Each pick is an unbiased draw from the browser's cryptographic random generator, as described in how our randomness works.
Why the generated street names sound real
Many of the combinations, such as Oak Street or Maple Avenue, exist in countless real towns; that is what makes them sound right.
26 of the 27 types are standard street suffixes in the US Postal Service's list of street suffix abbreviations, such as AVE for Avenue and CT for Court. Woods is the one type that is not on it.
For an address in a place that clearly does not exist, use the random address generator. To name the town around the streets, use the town name generator, or the village name generator for somewhere smaller.
Questions about the street name generator
How many street names can it make?
2,862 with the type on random: 106 names times 27 street types. With one type chosen, such as Lane, there are 106.
Can the same street name appear twice?
Not within one set: the generator keeps drawing until it has as many different names as you asked for. A new set can repeat names from the last one.
Are these real streets?
Many exist somewhere, because names like Oak Street and Maple Avenue are common. They are not tied to any real address. For complete fictional addresses in made-up towns, use the random address generator.
